Amazon FBA Prep Checklist: Requirements That Get Shipments Accepted

Amazon doesn't reject FBA shipments to be difficult — it rejects them because unprepared inventory breaks its automated receiving system. Every rejection means delays, re-prep fees, and worst of all, stockouts on live listings.

This is the prep checklist we run for every FBA shipment. Use it yourself, or hand the whole thing to a prep partner.

1. Product inspection

Before anything gets a label, every unit is checked: correct variant and quantity, no damage, no manufacturing defects, accessories and manuals included where applicable. Catching problems here costs minutes; catching them at Amazon costs a rejected shipment.

2. FNSKU labeling

  • Each unit needs its Amazon FNSKU barcode — printed clearly, scannable, and placed so it doesn't wrap around corners or cover other barcodes.
  • Manufacturer barcodes (UPC/EAN) must be covered when they don't match the FNSKU.
  • Labels must survive transit: smudged or peeling labels are one of the most common rejection reasons.

3. Polybagging (where required)

  • Apparel, soft goods, and anything Amazon flags as needing protection goes in a polybag.
  • Bags must be transparent, sealed, and carry a suffocation warning if the opening is 5 inches or larger.
  • The FNSKU goes on the outside of the bag — never inside where it can't be scanned.

4. Carton prep and labeling

  • Use sturdy, undamaged cartons. Overstuffed or bulging boxes get flagged.
  • Each carton needs the Amazon shipment ID label, placed visibly on the outside.
  • Don't mix SKUs in a carton unless the shipment plan specifically allows it — and label mixed cartons exactly as Amazon instructs.
  • Palletized shipments need stretch wrap, no overhang, and labels on all four sides.

5. Replenishment timing

Prep is only half the job. Plan replenishment around your sales velocity and inbound lead times — shipments should arrive before you run low, not after. A good prep partner watches your stock levels and triggers the next shipment proactively.

The 4 mistakes that get shipments rejected

  1. Wrong or unscannable barcodes — the #1 cause, and the easiest to prevent.
  2. Missing suffocation warnings on polybags.
  3. Mixed-SKU cartons that don't match the shipment plan.
  4. Damaged cartons — if the box can't survive the conveyor, Amazon won't take it.

Doing it yourself vs. using a prep service

DIY prep works at very low volume, but the labor, label printers, polybags, and carton stock add up — and one rejected shipment wipes out the savings. A prep service spreads those fixed costs across many sellers and does this all day, every day. Our Amazon FBA service runs inspection, FNSKU labeling, polybagging, and carton prep to Amazon's requirements, then forwards to the fulfillment center — with replenishment planned around your sales pace.
